Tuesday 26th January

Hi I hope you all enjoyed our new Dough disco songs and your fingers are feeling strong ready for writing.  Here are today’s activities.

Phonics

Today’s Set 2 sound is “ow - blow the snow”.   It will be uploaded at 9.30 and you have 24 hours to watch it before it has been removed.

TOP TIP:  At school we are pausing the video as Rosie asks us the write the word. That way we know if the children can write the work independently, or whether they are simply copying Rosie. They need to write it on their own

When the lesson has finished I would like you to take a break before joining the page again. Now I would like you to watch the Set 2 spelling video to match today’s sound. You will need your pink homework book and a pencil.  You will need your grown up to keep pausing the video to give you time to write and check your words, as Rosie might be working faster or slower than you.

English

Today I would like you to independently write one sentence about this picture.
Remember to use your sound mat to help you when you are Fred talking. Can you sit your letters on the lines correctly? Can you see your finger spaces?

If you want to print out this picture here the link.
Maths

Today we are meeting Numberblock Extreme 14 for the first time. As well as introducing number 14 this episode is our first look at doubling and halving numbers (this statement exceeds the Early learning goal statement for the end of the year)
Watch the episode and then ask your child the following question.
  • Why do you think 14 has rainbow eyebrows?
Now we are going to look at the numbers 2,4,6,8,10,12 and 14. In the episode it shows the numbers dividing into two parts (halving)  and then joining back together to the whole number (doubling)
Can you record which pair of numbers 2,4,6,8,10,12 and 14 will make when they are halved.
You could either draw the characters or record a doubling addition eg 1 + 1 = 2, 4 + 4 =8 etc
This is the mathematical language we would model at school:

“Double 2 is 4”
“Half of 4 is 2”

Afternoon activities

RE

As part of our topic work over the last term we have looked at lots of different religious festivals and celebrations and have talked as a class about why we celebrate these. These include Harvest, Rememberance day, Bonfire night, Christmas, Diwali and Hanukkah.

The next festival we would have looked at in school is Tu B’Shevat (Tu B’Shvat)
This is a Jewish Festival that takes place this year on Wednesday 27th - Thursday 28th January.  This is one of four Jewish New Years (Rosh Hashanahs) and is the ‘New Year or birthday for Trees’

Here is a clever video which explains how Tu B’Shvat is celebrated with a Seder (meal) to say thank you.
Wouldn’t it be fun to celebrate this festival at home and eats lots of healthy fruit.

In class Maths video and live maths lesson preparation tasks

Our live Zoom maths lesson will take place on Wednesday 27th January at 1.30. Prior to the lesson you will need to make or gather the following items.
  • Large individual number cards (A5) for the numbers 0 - 15 (your child can draw these with a felt-tip on 1/2 a piece of paper.)
  • Divide a piece of A4 paper into 6 boxes and then choose 6 numbers between 0 -15 and ask your child to write one in each box. Please make 2 of these for 2 games.
  • Felt-tip ready to circle the numbers.

We can’t wait to see your smiling faces again tomorrow!
